Sign makers in Cape Town

We can make signs to order, either one offs or in numbers, this one was designed by the shop owner, then CNC cut and made up by Nigel.

This sign is made to be hung on chains, so is double sided.

The sign has still to be sprayed with a moisture proof clear lacquer.

This was at the Treasury Market which is hosted once a month at the Slow Food market in Stellenbosch at the Oude Libertas wine farm in Stellenbosch.

Treasury market is open from 9am to 2pm only, so you need to start early to see all thats on offer.

The stall was a success and Bokke & Blomme will be back next month.

The Hout Bay Yacht Club

I am not quite a founder member of the HBYC but with around thirty three years (33) membership, I must be close? The idea was started with a mass meeting at the old Hout Bay Hotel Rotunda Room, the place was packed, so much in fact, you had to stand up, there was just no space to sit!

Sail training takes place each thursday and quite early, so around 5.30pm.

The HBYC is a popular stop over for world cruisers, here some are bringing stores onto the marina to stock up their yachts for the next leg of their voyage.

How nice is that!

Check here to see more about the Hout Bay Yacht Club  http://www.hbyc.co.za/

Meet Henry

We hand raised a local pigeon, found with his nest on the pavement at our local Shopright Checkers store

Henry grew to be a fully grown bird, he was quite free and flew around the house and into my worshop, all on his own and as he felt the need.

Henry at work.

Henry in the office. He eventually flew off one day and that was the last we saw of Henry, we hope he has a mate and is safe.

Rufford Old Hall, Lancashire, England

This famous land mark home was the home of the Hesketh family, its a monument to the past and well worth a visit next time your in the Liverpool area. It really does look exactly like this picture.

Find more on the house here

 http://ckdboats.blogspot.com/search/label/Lancashires%20heritage

I am always fascinated by this amazing art work, its a Briar or Bramble but carved from a single block of wood. Those leaves are even carved underneath! Last time I saw it, they had it hanging on the wall next to that long upstairs window and to the left hand side.

It has also been displayed as a table top piece, so ask when your inside, there are stewards on each floor to advise you. Most work for free for the National Trust.

How hard can that be.

We get visitors

We get them all the time but one of these is rather special.

Ray was my employer way back in 1970 or so, he was the agent to Lockwood Homes, thats a lock in panel house construction, still made today but seems expensive now when we have a Rand currency that is so weak.

Ray and Nadia called on me to discuss a kit to a boat named a Grey Seal by Iain Oughtred, their version will be extended to make it 28ft long. I have only seen Ray once since finishing the build on the third home I helped build for him, which was around forty two (42) years back! Ray told me he was responsable for building over 120 Lockwood homes in South Africa.

Lockwood? check them out here  http://www.lockwood.co.nz/  I have recently been in touch with them.

Drumbeat Charters of Hout Bay

Any visit to the Cape Town area probably means you will go up Table Mountain to take in the views, while your up there look far to your left, thats the direction of Hout Bay and Drumbeat Charters.

The all aluminium Alexander Simonis designed Drumbeat 2, its a special boat and was designed for safety while taking trippers into Seal Island (dyker island) you wont quite touch the seals but you sure get close!

Hout Bay, Seal Island is just below the large pointed cliff on the left of the picture.
Both pictures are taken from the Drumbeat Charters web site.

We meet the Sheriff

In this case we are talking about the Sheriff of Simonstown, he left his guns and horse at home and arrived by car, being a very neat and economical Smart car, smart guy, as petrol prices went to a record high only the night before.

The guy was really organised, he explained the terms and rules of the auction sale and even told us there were no gohost buyers in our midst.

Our interest was in the plot of land behind the sheriff, about 780 square meters, did we win, in a word no!

Gunner Robert Henry McBride, Stalag X1A

A story my dad wrote and I was fortunate to have published, its readable and according to my mother is really the truth.

Gunner Robert McBride

Robert McBride (centre), after liberation in 1945. Tony Powsong is on the right.

My dad is the central figure, Tony is on the right, I am not sure who is on the left.

Roy

Unit : Royal Artillery

Served : North Africa (captured)
Army No. : 1500264
POW No. : 140378
Camps : PG 78, Stalag XIA

My Days in the British Army by Gunner Rob McBride 1500264. Royal Artillery. From July 1939 to April 1945

Sketches of British prisoners of war by Ted Jones. Left to right Rob McBride of Rock Ferry, Birkenhead, Fred Seanor from Huyton, Jim/John Burrian and "Peggy" O'Neill, both of Liverpool.

My dad writes below.

I am not an advocate for war. Any kind of war causes death, suffering and untold misery. Out of war sometimes will come frustrations and laughter. This is the story of my war, or the very small part I was permitted to play in it. After all these years, I often think was it all really worth it. Why countries of this world cannot live in peace remains to be seen. The wars which have occurred since 1945 are still a reminder, are countries better off afterwards?

July 1939 on the eve of the greatest war in history, aged 20 I was called up in what was then called the first militia. Living then in Birkenhead in Cheshire I didn't have any great distance to travel to my first camp which was at Arrowe Park, Birkenhead. I thought it was great, a soldier in the British Army. I think even then we were half soldier and half civilian, for we were issued with the regulation uniform, and for walking out, were given grey flannel slacks and blue blazer. Once I was asked by a passer by which army did I belong. The blue beret which went with the walking out dress didn't help matters either! But, true to tradition we were given a hard time on how to be a soldier, we were drilled by regular soldiers who really knew their job, and after a few months of Physical Training we were really fit and raring to go. It was hard work but fun. Six months of this and back to civvy street. Little did we know in just a few short months what lay in store for us.
